About Me

Hi! My name is Karla Janse van Vuuren. I sometimes can’t believe that there was a time I couldn’t read – it is such a part of who I am! I read about 50 novels a year: from historical fiction to classics to crime fiction (and kiddies’ stories since I’m a mom to two little bookworms!).

I live in Johannesburg, South Africa with my husband and kids. I have 13 years’ experience as a food writer and stylist for one of the biggest daily newspapers in South Africa.

I’m also a baking addict and I love to create new things in the kitchen. The Bookworm Bakes brings together two of my biggest passions: reading and baking.

This blog is basically an experiment in book and food pairing – you can read my review of the book, and be inspired to get busy in the kitchen with the recipe I’ve paired it with.

Recipe images are styled by me and the photos are taken by my extremely talented and supportive husband Gerrie Janse van Vuuren – check out his work here.

Please get in touch and tell me which books you love, and what you like to create in the kitchen.

The books: Everything from contemporary fiction by writers like Ken Follett, Lucinda Riley, Kate Morton and Lee Child, to Christian fiction by Francine Rivers and Liz Curtis Higgs and classics by the greats – Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Alexandre Dumas and many more.

The bakes: Every book is paired with a recipe which complements it: it might be a dish mentioned in the novel, something I like eating while reading the book, or a tongue-in-cheek pairing!
