On Persuasion’s rocky road to love
The book: Persuasion by Jane Austen
Genre: Romance Novel
First published: 1817, six months after the death of its author
The bake: Chocolate Rocky Road
What’s the story?
This is one of Jane Austen’s lesser-known works. It’s also her very last completed novel. When asked to name her novels, most people would probably come up with Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility and Emma. But I think very few would name Persuasion. And that’s a shame! What an engaging read. It tells the story of Anne Elliot, a girl in her 20’s living with her father, Sir Walter and sister Elizabeth at Kellynch Hall in Somersetshire.
Anne is unmarried, but a few years earlier she was engaged to a Captain Frederick Wentworth. Unfortunately, Anne was persuaded (mainly by Lady Russell, a family friend), that he was not worthy of her, and she broke of the engagement.
The Elliot-family’s fortune changes, and Sir Walter decides to rent out the family home. The family moves to Bath, but Anne spends a lot of her time with her sister Mary and Lady Russell in Somersetshire. The couple renting Kellynch Hall turns out to be none other than family of said Captain Wentworth, and of course, this leads to Anne crossing paths with him again. Will Captain Wentworth be persuaded to give their relationship another chance?
Why read it?
If you are a fan of Austen, then that is reason enough. And especially if you are a fan of Lizzy Bennet from Pride & Prejudice as Anne Elliot has qualities which remind me of her. I enjoyed this glimpse into Austen’s world, and the characters in this novel is certainly a treat. My favorite is actually sir Walter, a vain and quite self-absorbed man, and I love Austen’s descriptions of him. Like this one:
“He considered the blessing of beauty as inferior only to the blessing of a baronetcy; and the Sir Walter Elliot, who united these gifts, was the constant object of his warmest respect and devotion.”
The language might be a bit heavy-going at first, especially if you are used to more modern fiction (some sentences are loooong), but you soon get used to it. It is also interesting to compare the social norms and standards of the time, to ours in 2021. Women really only had one goal in life: to marry, and to marry well. A spinster or old maid was someone to be pitied. Luckily today, there is no need for marriage to confirm your usefulness to society.

This bake is beyond decadent. It’s also super easy to make. I decided it’s the perfect partner for Persuasion because nobody needs to be persuaded to try this sweet treat! Actually, it’s persuasion personified! And, the characters in the book certainly seem to have a rocky road to true happiness.
I often make this Rocky Road as a birthday gift, especially if I don’t know what to get someone. The chances are very good that they will love this sweet. You can customize it with your favourite ingredients. I’ve made it with Amarula, Cape Velvet and Baileys, and it was equally delish every time.
Due to the current ban on alcohol sales in South Africa (because of Covid and lockdown) and the lack of any cream liqueur in my house, I had to make an alcohol-free version this time. But it was equally yummy! Use different sweets and chocolate to really make it your own.

Chocolate Rocky Road

minutesIngredients
50 ml Amarula Cream liqueur (substitute with full cream milk for a non-alcoholic version)
200 g dark chocolate
20 g butter
80 ml condensed milk
A handful of shortbread biscuits, roughly chopped
150 mini pink and white marshmallows
A big handful of your favourite sweets like Speckled Eggs, Jelly Tots, Smarties etc
200 g white chocolate, roughly chopped
Directions
- Line an 8 cm x 20 cm pan with non-stick baking paper.
- Place the liqueur (or milk), chocolate butter and condensed milk in a pot and heat over very low heat until melted (you can also do this in the microwave or over a double-boiler). Stir until smooth.
- Remove from the heat and stir in the other ingredients (but only half of the white chocolate). Spoon into the prepared pan and refrigerate until set (about four hours).
- Melt the rest of the white chocolate and drizzle it in a creative way over the rocky road. Allow to set, cut into squares and serve. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week (but will it last that long?)

As I recipient of this Rocky Road I can personally attest to it’s awesome yummyness!
As for the book…. I grew up in a house filled with girls and we used to have Jane Austin movie marathons. We started Persuasion once but stopped after we all fell asleep. Like you said it has a slow start. However, I think I have been ‘persuaded’ 😜😜 to find the book and try it again.
Now to make some rocky road…
